Miss Universe Visits Mexico with Smile Train
"I am very excited to see the incredible work that the Smile Train team does in collaboration with Casa Azul, it gives me great pleasure to meet the doctors, who are very dedicated and make a great difference in the lives of the children,"
- Miss Universe 2017, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters -
Miss Universe 2017 Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters is a Goodwill Ambassador for Smile Train - an international children’s charity with a sustainable approach to a single, solvable problem: cleft lip and palate. Demi had the opportunity to travel to Monterrey and Mexico City, Mexico where she learned about cleft and met the treated and untreated patients.
First stop: Monterrey, Mexico. Demi was warmly welcomed with a traditional dance performance to start off her visit at Smile Train's partner clinic Casa Azul. At the clinic, she met with the plastic surgeons who perform cleft surgeries daily. She was shown firsthand how the procedure works and the recovery process of the cleft. Afterward, Demi was greeted by patients, some of which had already undergone their surgeries. One little girl was celebrating her 15th birthday and wore her quinceanera gown - a miniature Miss Universe.
After the clinic, Demi visited a patient's home where she met with the family of a baby who was only weeks away from getting her cleft surgery. After the visit, they surprised Demi with a delicious homecooked meal.
From Monterrey, Demi traveled to Mexico City where she met up with Miss USA Sarah Rose Summers and Miss Universe Mexico Andrea Toscano. First thing in the morning, the women prepared for their very first Smile Train surgery. After meeting the patient and her family, they put on their scrubs and met with the doctors of the partner hospital. The surgery was very quick - about 45 mins in length - and the patient did a fantastic job.
Following the surgery, the titleholder's glammed up for a very special event hosted by former Miss Universe Lupita Jones. They invited close pageant friends and had the opportunity to discuss the importance of pageants today.
To end the night, Demi tried some authentic Mexican cuisine with Miss USA, Miss Universe Mexico, and the Smile Train team.
