Fueling Haiti Fundraising Efforts in NYC!

posted by Kristen Dalton at 02:01pm on 01/22/2010

Hey Everyone!

The people in Haiti are experiencing so much tragedy and trauma. I can not even imagine the heart ache they must be going through. The amount of response to help the Haitians has been incredible and so very inspiring. It makes me proud to be an American. It seems like there are so many good people with a genuine interest to help and make a difference. Although we can not all go over to Haiti to physically lend a helping hand, there are many ways we can support financially. You can visit www.redcross.org to find out exactly how.

I attended two fundraising events for the Haiti relief efforts on Wednesday night. The first one called Hearts for Haiti was such a wonderful turnout and it raised just shy of $20,000, and $7,000 of that was raised in the first 45 minutes! The money that was raised will go to Doctors without Borders, who are doctors that are traveling to Haiti and need medical supplies and resources. Mayor Bloomberg was there and spoke about the importance of giving back and the fact the NYC alone has already raised $500,000 dollars for the Haiti relief effort.  Stefania and I went together to the second event which was a Haiti Disaster Relief Fundraiser at SPiN New York. 30 Rock actors, Susan Sarandon and Russell Simmons, were there to support the effort. I was so proud to be living in NYC on that night because there were so many New Yorkers that came out to give what they could of their resources so Haitians can have food and water.

Now, I am in the Bahamas for the Michael Jordan Celebrity Golf Tournament which raises money for the Butch Kerzer Foundation, Make A Wish Foundation and 40 other charities that celebrities bring to the table.  Today I rock climbed, golfed and spoke with at-risk students for dropping out of school. If the students are doing well in school they get to come to the Atlantis to play! The weather here is out of this world. I am so happy to be in the sun! I will let you know how the rest of the trip goes next time!

Have a splendid weekend!
