An excited crowd gathered at both evening events. The smaller Saturday night gathering gave the Miss Cayman Islands committee, contestants and others the chance to meet Ms. Wurtzbach, take photographs and enjoy an evening overlooking the George Town waterfront.

Ms. Wurtzbach also toured Grand Cayman, visiting George Town, Camana Bay and the Eastern Districts, and planned to visit Stingray City Sunday. Read the full link here.

Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach takes public HIV test

AsianJournal.com – Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach took time off her busy schedule to take a public HIV test at New York City’s Apicha Community Health Center Monday, June 20 to get the word out and encourage others to get tested and know their status.

“Over one million people in the United States are living with HIV and this number continues to increase each year by 50,000. One in eight people who have HIV don’t even know it yet because they don’t get themselves tested and because of that, they are not getting the right kind of care and treatment that they deserve and should have,” Miss Wurtzbach said.
The public test took place in advance of National HIV Testing Day on Monday, June 27 when special testing events will be held around the United States.

“It is vital to get tested at least once in your lifetime. The risk is in not knowing,” the reigning Miss Universe added. Ending the stigma associated with testing that exists in many parts of the world is critical to ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic as it is estimated that 17.1 million of the 36.9 million people living with HIV worldwide do not know they are infected.
“The most important thing about getting an HIV test today is to destigmatize the whole idea of knowing your HIV status,” said Therese Rodriguez, Apicha’s CEO. “She will hopefully inspire more people to have the courage to get themselves tested.” Rodriguez explained that knowing one’s status is crucial in the process of getting the necessary help one needs.Read the full article here.

How Miss Universe is overhauling the pageant to make you love it again

BusinessInsider.com – Miss Universe knows what you think of it. And it’s quietly making a number of changes that might make you rethink the pageant.

Many people criticize Miss Universe for being an antiquated celebration of superficial femininity. While the annual show remains popular with its core audience more than 50 years after it was founded, its image as a brand has seen better days.

That may be changing. Donald Trump unloaded the organization in 2015 after a falling out with its broadcaster, NBC, following his controversial statements about Mexican immigrants. He sold to WME/IMG, which is primarily known as a talent agency but is widely growing its business ventures, including original productions.

In Miss Universe, first of all, WME/IMG saw a chance to obtain a massive global audience that will take advantage of the company’s other relationships within entertainment. (Actress Julianne Hough cohosted this month’s Miss USA competition, and she also happens to be signed with WME.)

The new Miss Universe/Miss USA owners want to take full advantage of that audience in ways the old shows simply left behind. They launched the Miss U app, the first official app for the Miss Universe organization, which allows fans a say in the voting and gives them access to content before and after the shows.

“There’s a huge community around this that we can leverage 365 days a year,” Michael Antinoro, who oversees Miss Universe at IMG Original Content, told Business Insider. “Frankly, in the past, most people looked at the organization, whether it was Miss USA or Miss Universe, once a year when the three-hour special came on TV. It was the only time they thought about it.”

But perhaps more significantly, WME/IMG wants to rethink what it means to be Miss USA or Miss Universe, and how it portrays the women aiming for the prizes.
