Addi Smith is currently a senior at 5A Mayfield High School in Las Cruces, New Mexico where she is the incoming Senior Class President and has been elected class president each year since her sophomore year. She is a merit scholar recipient for mathematics, a member of the National Honor Society, and has been on the honor roll throughout high school. She is captain of her state runner-up varsity cheer squad. She has lettered in cheer since her freshman year and is a two year back-to-back All-American Cheerleader. She volunteers her time with several New Mexico basic needs charities and has helped to raise monies for the American Heart Association and Hearts for Autism Fund. She was a Jr. Camp counselor at Camp New Amigos for autistic children and has volunteered for the Special Olympics as well.
After meeting the Governor of New Mexico Susana Martinez, Addi decided to make reading her focus. She has helped her state by promoting and supporting the Governor’s “Read to Lead” early childhood reading initiative. She has promoted the state’s reading initiative to over 7,000 New Mexico children and was honored to work with the Governor’s administration including Secretary of Education, Hanna Skandera. She was honored that the Governor took notice of her efforts and awarded her a certificate for promoting the state’s “Read to Lead” initiative.
Most fulfilling to Addi is the direction of her honors and achievements. They were selected by a variety that includes her classmates, her teachers, coaches and the Governor of New Mexico. Her classmates selected her as Class President, her teachers for a merit scholar award, her coaches as Team Captain and the Governor for her contribution to the state. She feels blessed to be able to interact with and to be respected by such a varying group of individuals.
