Skin Tip of the Week: How to Fend Off Dry Skin in Winter

Q: Each winter I notice a change in the texture of my skin. It often becomes dry and itchy. I've heard that it's especially important to apply lotions and moisturizers, but there are so many on the market...I don’t even know where to begin!  What types of products do you recommend?

A: This is a very timely question.  The onset of winter means cold temperatures, low humidity and harsh winds--three factors that can combine to cause dry, itchy skin.  First, the skin barrier must be protected with sunscreen, preferably SPF 30 or higher.  We often forget that even in the winter, sun exposure can damage exposed skin on your face, especially if you live in an area that receives lots of snow.  Second, it's important to use a moisturizer that will lock in moisture.  I find that emollient creams like Aquaphor Healing Ointment work best.  Also look for products that contain glycerin or hyaluronic acid.  My recommended favorite is Avon's "Derma Full", a hyaluronic facial serum that can hold 1000x its weight in water.  If you regularly apply this or another suitable topical moisturizer and the itching continues past a week (especially if there are any bumps or visual skin changes) make an appointment with a dermatologist or family physician.

The Bottom line here is to always remember to protect exposed skin, regardless of the season.  Exposure to sunlight and the elements is the leading cause of skin damage.  Proper skincare can take years off your complexion!
