Riyo Mori was officially crowned Miss Universe 2007 on May 28th, 2007 and since that day, life for this Japanese beauty has been a whirlwind of traveling, volunteering, attending red carpet events and meeting notable figures and dignitaries all over the world. A self-described"modern-day female samurai,"Riyo prides herself on having a great sense of independence and self. Throughout the duration of her reign, Riyo has increased HIV/AIDS awareness by focusing on women’s health and reproductive issues. She has forged relationships with organizations committed to research and education, including: Gay Men’s Health Crisis, the Latino Commission on AIDS, Global Health Council and God’s Love We Deliver. She intends to continue working on behalf of HIV/AIDS organizations and wants to spread a message of empowerment and independence to women all over the world, even after her reign is over. "My mother taught me that women can have it all. You don’t have to choose between having a family or career, you can do both," says Riyo.
