March 31st, 2009 - Statement by Paula M. Shugart, President of the Miss Universe Organization regarding Guantánamo Bay blog entry by Miss Universe, Dayana Mendoza:
The Miss Universe Organization has had a longstanding relationship with the USO (United Service Organizations). All three titleholders (Miss Universe, Miss USA and Miss Teen USA) have participated in many USO goodwill tours to visit the men and women in uniform who serve our country around the world.
As part of the USO’s entertainment program, which boosts the morale of U.S. troops, they have traveled to many locations and many bases around the globe including Iraq, Afghanistan, Japan, Korea and most recently, Guantánamo Bay in Cuba, where the U.S. has maintained a naval base since 1898.
Dayana Mendoza’s comments on her blog were in reference to the hospitality she received while meeting the members of the U.S. military and their families who are stationed in Guantánamo.
The Miss Universe Organization echoes the mission of the USO, which is to lift the spirits of U.S.troops and their families wherever they serve. We will continue to show our appreciation and express our gratitude to the military personnel who serve our nation.

I hope Dayana doesn't stop writing on her blog. Every time she wrote about her experience in every event she attended gave us an insight to what a Miss Universe really does and how wonderful it is for her to help others while enjoying what she does. She is the most vulnerable, sensitive , loving and brightest Miss Universe ever, that's what makes her special and an overall beauty.

It's too bad that Dayana writes a blog entry on her Guantanamo Bay visit for a small audience of MU fans, and then the New York Times and Huffington Post people find it , shine a spotlight on it, twist what she wrote, and ridicule her for writing things that she never would have said if she had written a formal article about her trip. It's not fair, but that's life. Hang in there, Dayana. You're doing a great job as Miss Universe!

Yo soy americano. Vivo en el sureste de los estados unidos, un lugar que en realidad apoya a la guerra y el tratamiento de prisioneros en guantanamo y otros prisiones de tortura que mantiene el ejercito americano. No pretendo que Miss Universo debe ser activista o que debe ayudar a la gente del mundo porque obviamente es otra cosa ser Miss Universo. Pero, al menos no debes decir tales tonterias, cosas que la gente bien sabe son mentiras. Aunque es probable que alguien te ha mandado decir esto, y que no es tu culpa completamente, tu participaste con ellos y una vez que visitas al sureste y mi estado de Alabama, te aseguro que yo voy a estar alli gritando y demostrando contra tu visita. No estas benvenida aqui por lo que has dicho y no mereces la coruna de Miss Universo.

Alexander you are one of the many that believe everything you read from the media and didn't bother to read what Dayana wrote. When she wrote about the detention center she only said "interesting", nothing else!! The rest of her comments were in regard to the Naval Base and the area under US control. Dayana is doing a great job worldwide on AIDS Prevention, just because her words were taken out of context doesn't give you or anyone else right tu put her down or offend her. Be a man and respect a great young lady for all the good she gives to others, specially with those with aids and other misgivings, and not for her non political views, which you do have. And don't use this forum to bash a sensitive young woman whose only mistake was to share her feelings and insights with others not knowing that there are some like you that would use it to distort and haurt her and the Miss Universe Organization.

Daya, desde mi corazón el mas grade apoyo a Tí por tus palabras , es lo mas inteligente que se puede esperar de Ti , no desmayes y no tomes en cuenta esas criticas destructivas que no tienen fundamente y lo que busca es vender periodicos y revistas que su unico interes es lo economico, y tu estas clara en lo que haces y dices.

hola dayana saludos desde maracay, para darte mi apoyo y mucha suerte en los pocos meses que te quedan de reinado, antes de estudiar ofertas para la television, estudia primero las ofertas academicas, saca tu carrera universitaria primero luego que tengas tu titulo universitario te puedes dedicar sin problema al modelaje o a la animacion ya sea en venezuela o en el exterior.
Tu eres de las pocas miss universo que le ha puesto picante y gracia al reinado sin caer en el escandalo, y sin crear mal gusto en la gente, continua asi con esa chispa y los supuestos escandalos de los desnudos y de tu controvertida visita a guantanamo duraron muy poco y a los minutos ya eran noticia vieja.
Dayana no pierdas nunca ese carisma que te ayudo a que tuvieras esa corona universal, hablando de la corona ¿que paso que no te he visto usando la corona que te dieron en vietnan? ¿se te perdio la corona o decidistes usar el modelo anterior?. es que cuando vi los videos de tus ultimas presentaciones y tu anuncio del proximo miss universo se te veia extraña usando el modelo viejo, es que la corona nueva te daba mas prestigio y es mas bonita que la corona anterior, espero que cuando entregues el titulo a tu sucesora estes usando la corana que te dieron en vietnan, chao

Si en verdad me puedes leer, es un sueño para mi que pases tus ojos por estas letras que tecleo desde un PC. Aprovecho estos segundos en los que me lees, para decirte que NUNCA cambies tu personalidad (la cual alcanzo a percibir desde mi pantalla cuando leo tu blog) y esa forma tan bella que tienes de expresarte; eso (además de tu inigualable belleza) es lo que te hace diferente a cualquier otra miss, que tú eres espontánea en lugar de postiza.
Fueron esas mismas cualidades por las que superaste a una compatriota mía. Si te sirve de consuelo, piensa que esa si ha metido la pata una y otra vez, todo eso por el simple hecho que, para unas cosas, carece de la naturalidad con la que tú tienes... Si esto te pasó a tí, no me quiero imaginar de qué habrá librado Dios a la Taly.
Yo no sé como sea la situación en tu vida cotidiana y qué tanto te haya afectado personalmente lo de las declaraciones de Guantánamo, pero piensa como yo; tú no dijiste nada que no debieras porque tenías que ir a ver como le metían un palo por el !@#3 a nadie, sino a pasear y eso fue lo que hiciste, y por ende, contaste de la forma en que lo hubiera hecho cualquier otra reina... O no, acuérdate que eso lo contaste desde la forma como sólo tú escribes, la misma que nos hace amarte y que espero que nunca cambies ;)

En tu pagina de Facebook le aclare a muchos que querian venir a decirte cosas desagradables lo que realmente dijiste sobre este lugar.
Sigo manteniendo mi posicion al respecto. TODO EL MUNDO malinterpreto el asunto y la prensa AMARILLISTA lo saco de contexto.
Siempre brillaras con luz propia Dayana. Y desde aqui me sentare a esperar como subiras como la espuma.

I don't see how the media always makes a big deal out of everything and turns the story around, surely Dayana meant no harm, she was only describing her experience and in no way did she mean to hurt nor over look anyones feelings. Miss Universe is an amazing human being and I can't wait to see the excitement in the Bahamas this year.

She is doing a job as any other, and she is just following rules. I don't care about media or anyone. She is an excellent top model and she has to be very careful when she is taking politic issues. That's it. She is the most beautiful and she doesn't have to go beyon this, even though she usually does it. Good luck, Dayana, don't worry and be happy.

Hello!!! I think Dayana Mendoza´s comments about Guantanamo are right...because if you see...a Miss Universe cannot be directly involved with political and internal issues of certain countries during her reign...but with the activities she has to and must do......Thank you Mrs Paula Shugart for that statement, it makes very clear that the Miss Universe organization have done a grat job.
