My first blog as Miss USA

Hello world! It is my fourth day as the new Miss USA and I am writing my first blog at my desk in my new apartment. I am so excited to be in New York City embarking on a new adventure.
First of all, I am still speechless and so honored to have won the 2011 Miss USA Pageant. Three weeks ago, while I was driving from my apartment in Los Angeles to the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, I never imagined I would not be driving back! (Don’t worry, my car is now safe and sound back in California thanks to my wonderful father.)
Despite only getting a maximum of five hours of sleep a night, I had the most amazing three weeks in Las Vegas. I was so lucky to be one of the 2011 Miss USA contestants. I was very fortunate to be among these beautiful and genuine women. I know that I will say the same after meeting this year’s Miss Universe contestants!
I find it crazy that I am going to Miss Universe. The first Miss Universe pageant that I watched on television was Miss Universe 2006, when Zuleyka Rivera of Puerto Rico won (in Los Angeles!) Ironically, Zuleyka was a judge at this year’s Miss USA. I have to start thinking of a national costume for the pageant…any ideas!?
After I won, I could not wait to spend the night with my family. My family is spread out across the country, so this pageant was something that really brought us together. The next morning, everyone took off on their respective flights and I took off for my new life back in New York City. I landed at JFK around 10:30 p.m. with Kamie Crawford, the reigning Miss Teen USA, and was brought to my new apartment for the year that I will be sharing with Miss Universe, Ximena Navarrete. First thing I noticed was how clean the apartment was! Unfortunately, with me as a roommate, that will change within a week or two!
I woke up at 5 a.m. for hair and makeup for my first day of media interviews. What a whirlwind! I appeared on “The Today Show,” “Access Hollywood” (where they surprised me with a Star Wars quiz!), “E! News,” with our pageant host, Giuliana Rancic, “Fox and Friends” and “Good Day New York.” At “Good Day New York” they surprised me with Buddy Valastro, star of my favorite show “Cake Boss!” It has been a crazy week, but I am anxious to get my year started.
I finally got to meet my boss today, the one and only Mr. Donald Trump! I was kind of nervous. I felt like I was on my way to visit royalty! Meeting Mr. Trump was an amazing experience and is something that I will always remember.
I also cannot wait to have weekly pop history quizzes with my other boss, the president of the Miss Universe Organization, Paula Shugart! She doesn’t know about this yet…
I am not sure what awaits me this year, but I’m going to take a deep breath and take it all in. I am hoping that this is a year of personal growth. I am only 21, and am still growing and learning more about myself. I would just like to thank a few people – first and foremost, my parents. They’ve supported me in everything I have done and I can feel how proud they are. They are the best parents possible. To my California state directors – Keith Lewis and Shanna Moakler. I don’t think I could have been any more prepared for Miss USA thanks to them. They didn’t just prep me for Miss USA, they prepped me for Miss Universe. To the judges – thank you for selecting me as your Miss USA for 2011. I promise I will not let you down.
In the words of the fabulous Miss Texas USA, Ana Rodriguez, “Let’s rock this, ladies!”
P.S. Don’t forget to check out pictures of my crowning moment!
